Microsoft stood up for Epic Games in a lawsuit with Apple
Microsoft condemned Apple for removing the popular game “Fortnite” from the App Store, pointing to potential damage to the corporation’s gaming business and other video game developers.
The lawsuit came from Microsoft amid a dispute between Apple and Epic Games. The conflict erupted after a game developer introduced a new payment system into its projects that bypasses Apple’s payment of transaction fees.
Epic Games claims that even before that, Apple threatened to cut off their access to their tools necessary to support the engine. «Unreal Engine». Microsoft said the move would hurt at least one of its own games, called «Forza street», using the same technology for the iOS version of the game.
Kevin Gummill, Microsoft general manager for game development, said Microsoft has «corporate» a license for the Unreal Engine, and Apple’s actions will prevent it and other developers from creating games using this engine for Mac and iPhone.
«If Unreal Engine is unable to support iOS or macOS games, Microsoft will have to choose between ditching existing and potential customers on iOS and macOS platforms, or choosing a different game engine when creating new games.», – noted Gammill.
Nicholas Penvarden, Epic’s VP of Engineering said several Unreal Engine users have contacted the company expressing concern that their projects will be disrupted.
Epic is judicially trying to restore developer access to platforms Apple. The corporation itself said that it would only make concessions if Epic resubmitted the version «Fortnite», which complies with its payment rules.
Apple said Friday that Epic unilaterally decided to break the payment rules after following them for over a decade. Apple believes that the game maker personally closed access to the iOS and macOS platforms.
