Universal Music invested in K-pop streaming platform

Universal Music Group Says To Join Streaming Platform Powered By Major K-Pop Record Labels.

Universal, the world’s largest music label, features superstars such as Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

Universal Music said Tuesday that it is investing in a platform launched last year by Big Hit Entertainment, behind k-pop superstars BTS..

YG, the label that represents another superstar group Blackpink, also invests in VenewLive.

Big Hit founded VenewLive last September as part of a joint venture called KBYK Live.

Following the investment, the record companies said VenewLive now has ambitions «globally».

The popularity of South Korean pop music (k-pop) has skyrocketed worldwide. BTS became the first K-pop group to reach # 1 on the US Billboard charts last year.

And girl group Blackpink, whose gorgeous videos regularly draw millions of viewers, set a new record for the largest premiere of a music video on YouTube last year..

A total of 1.65 million fans tuned in to unveil their new song, How You Like That, breaking the record set by BTS in February.

Big Hit says BTS’s concert, which aired on VenewLive last year, was watched by 993,000 people worldwide.

«The past year has shown that the need for reliable and innovative streaming has never been greater», – said executive vice president of Universal Music Group Boyd Muir.

Big Hit Entertainment was founded in 2005 by a South Korean music producer Bang Shi Hyuk. In October 2020, the company listed its shares on the Korean Stock Exchange.

As a result, the company has a market value of over $ 8 billion..
